How to Layer Your Necklaces for that Wow Effect

Layering is all the rage these days. The trend of layering necklaces has been in for a while and is still going strong. No matter the number of layers you choose to sport, the allure of this style is that it immediately dresses up any outfit and elevates you from ok to wow.

The reason we love layering is that it gives you a lot of flexibility. All you have to do is mix and match your necklaces to achieve a number of different styles. You can layer any necklace, chunky chokers, to delicate daily pieces.

Layering necklaces is an art form and it can be difficult to pull off successfully. The aim is to look effortlessly chic. While there are no rules for how to layer, here are some guidelines to help you rock the look!

  • Go multi-layer

The point of layering necklaces is to stack. So don’t be afraid to pile them on. Double layers may seem less intimidating if you are just venturing into the world of layered necklaces.

Three layers seems to be the sweet spot and most people’s favorite. It gives a perfect symmetrical feel to your overall appearance. Go above four layers for a more statement, dressy style.

    Pick your lengths

Choosing the lengths of your necklaces is important to distribute the layers right.

One tip is to begin with a chain at the base of your neck, just at your collar bone. For most people, this will be a chain of about 14 inches. From there, you can layer upwards and/or downwards. The neckline you are wearing will be a deciding a factor on if and how you need to go up or down.

To easily add length to your stack, choose a lariat necklace.

    Mix up your textures

You can choose to stick with one texture for a cohesive appearance but mixing up and playing with the textures of your necklaces adds an extra dimension to your layered necklace look.

Choose from a variety of textures such as beaded, smooth, knotted, fabric or wood.

     Delicate and chunky

Combine delicate pieces with chunkier necklaces to fill out your neck. If you have a statement necklace that is quite eye-catching, layering this with smaller, delicate chains will blend it effortlessly with the rest of your outfit.

    Choose your metals

If you’re a confident accessorizer, try mixing up your metals for a unique and modern vibe. Combining silver, gold and rose gold tones adds to the bold, statement style of your layer. Why stick with just one color when you can combine and slay!

     Add some color

Don’t be afraid to add some color when layering your necklace. You can do this by adding a necklace with gemstones or fabric. Mixing up metal with other colored materials also adds texture to your stack.

     Consider your neckline

It’s important to consider your neckline when deciding what kind of necklaces you need to layer. If you are wearing a high neckline, such as boat, jewelry or halter tops, consider starting your layers lower, so that it does not clash with the neckline. For off the shoulder or strapless necklines, a choker stack matches perfectly.

    Where to start your layer

Whether you start at the top and work your way down or vice-versa makes little to no difference. The first piece in your stack should be the shortest while the rest should be of graduated lengths. This helps keep the pieces from tangling and makes for a clean look.

How to layer necklaces without tangling

This is one question we get asked a lot! There’s nothing worse than carefully layering your best necklaces, only to have them get into a jumbled knot of metal. To layer your necklaces without tangling, it’s best to leave each necklace at least one inch apart.

     Choose an already layered necklace

If you’re reluctant to create your own, why not go for an already layered necklace instead of multiple single necklaces?

Layered necklaces are designed to simplify the process of layering! They contain multi layers joined at a single clasp. This helps to prevent tangling as well and makes for a cohesive, easy item to wear.  The flip side is that you don’t have the same flexibility as you do when you create your own stack.
