The Lazy Guide to Pursuing Your Dreams

We’re all pretty lazy, right? Well, at least I am.

So when it comes to being happy, you think we would just… know.

But more often than not that isn’t the case. You might start to get a glimmer of what you want to do and then some outside force slams it down like Michael Jordan would if he were playing your three foot niece.

As kids we’re told that we can do whatever we want with our life. But at some point it all stops.

The people around you somehow change their minds and advise you to get your head out of the clouds and do something responsible like following a more ‘traditional path’.

That your dreams of being a business owner are invalid. Not possible.

There’s is nothing wrong with following a traditional path, just as long as you are doing what you love.

The Lazy Guide to Pursuing Your Dreams

Maybe you want to start an online business and live in another country?

Maybe you want to live on your terms and start a business that supports your family?

If you’re passion lies in building a business that you can thrive on and be proud of, grab a big cup of coffee and keep reading.

Because I’d like to share the incredibly lazy and foolproof process for ‘going for it’ and pursuing your dreams.

1. Define Your Version of Success

Success has many definitions. But the only one that really matters is yours.

For instance if your definition of success was to make the world a better place and your business helps feed 100 families in your local area each month. Then you’re wildly successful.

And if you wanted to bring a smile to your customers’ face during the day and be able to feed your family at night and are are able to accomplish that — then you’re also wildly successful.

Write your definition down on a sheet of paper and put it in your purse or wallet. Hold it close and never forget it.

Becoming successful can be very easy. As long as you know what you’re working towards and keep that definition close to your heart.

2. Identify Your Passions

What are the things you find pleasure in doing? When you are off work, how do you spend your free time? Anything you enjoy doing for free at any time at all is where your passion lies.

Put pen to paper and write down a list of things you love doing in order of importance.

These are the things you actually can’t stay a long time without doing. With this list written in order of importance, then you can identify the number one thing you are most passionate about.

From there, you can ask yourself one big question. Could you make a business out of that passion?

Dig deep and do the work here. You may surprise yourself.

3. Forward Thinking

Dwelling on the negative will never do you any good. Think of ways to better yourself and how you can move forward.

Maybe you could read a book or two on the topic you outlined in step 2? Or perhaps even take a day for yourself and think about your definition of success.

Don’t be one of those people who are discouraged and are unable to achieve their purpose in life by making excuses.

Don’t have an MBA and never went to school to be a business owner? Well, neither did Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and many other of the incredible entrepreneurs I have had the pleasure of working with.

Do not let lack of resources or background pull you down. Be innovative and make do with the ones you have by making your dream a reality. Be scrappy and develop your skills!

4. Make A Game Plan

That dream you have? Validate it. Make sure it will work before you spend thousands of dollars and hours on it. Remember, we’re lazy, we want to be smart about building this business.

So avoiding unnecessary rough waters by validating your business idea is highly advised.

After that, you should make a plan so that you know those steps you need to ensure your business has a foundation. If you truly want your goals to be achievable, break them into smaller steps. Be positive and work directly towards it.

With a well laid-out plan, you will be focused on fully accomplishing your goal.

5. Execute

After creating a plan for your idea and validating it, decide on the route to follow in accomplishing your purpose for life. Then take immediate action.

Don’t think about it for the next 6 months, just get started. And you don’t even have to test the depth of the puddle with both feet. By putting one step in at a time you’re already on the right track.

Taking action immediately also helps fight off fear and doubt. Self-confidence comes into play once you are committed to building your dream business. If your set of objectives are not actioned within the first few weeks, then it may be quite daunting to have them actualized.

Executing the plan you built in ‘lazy step 4’ brings you closer to making your dream a reality.

Time to burst your bubble

This was your lazy guide to pursuing your dreams. But let’s be honest. Building a business that is sustainable and worth working on won’t be easy.

You’ll need to work hard. Very hard in fact.

But you should also keep in mind that working hard isn’t the only factor for building this business.

Work smart too.

You’ve already been working smart by defining your definition of success, validating your business idea, and making a game plan.

So keep working smart. Some might call you a little lazy, but there is some truth to that.

Why bother absolutely killing yourself when you can work smart and be just as effective? Especially if you have a full time job and want to bring this to life.

In closing here is a quote by Mark Twain. Think about it.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
