Twitter is Banning User Names Containing Elon Musk

It would appear Twitter’s true self is coming to light;

The social media platform is putting a lock on any unverified accounts that use the name of Elon Musk.

There have been multiple reports stating Twitter made this move as a defense against scammers. Individuals have been posing on the platform as Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, and have been trying to trick other Twitter users into sending them cryptocurrency.

The scam accounts achieved this by way of setting up an account with the CEO’s name and picture. The account would then reply to one of the real CEO’s tweets, and therefore make it appear to be an authentic threaded reply.

According to The Verge;

“The tweets often take the same formulation: Users are offered a rare chance to get in on the ground floor of a new type of blockchain technology, and all they have to do to get rich quick is fork over some cash in exchange for tokens of a new cryptocurrency they’ve never heard of.”

In a statement released by a spokesman for Twitter; it was stated that this move was in an effort to up their game on the battling of spam and malicious activity.

The lock on profiles that contain the Elon Musk name is their latest effort. They are hoping with these new measures in place, they will be able to weed out the accounts that tend to use obvious terms that are most commonly associated with spam and spam campaigns alike.

On Monday, a spokesman reemphasized that Twitter, in an effort to better serve the conversation; will continue to battle spam and other malicious endeavors that occur on their platform.

However, many Twitter users took to the platform to take issue with the comment…

“Why Are Twitter Not Banning Accounts Containing “Nazi”?”

We asked Twitter why they’re not also locking accounts owned by Nazis/ones using “Nazi” in their display names.

They said they’re “exploring new tactics for detecting and removing malicious accounts as we scale our level of impact.”

The consensus is that you can spew all the hate you want, and nothing is said. Now they are taking action against accounts with Musk’s name. Some have gone so far as to say in their tweets that Twitter is slowly but surely becoming a Nazi state.
