The Effects of Drinking A Can of Coke

As you can see above, there are 7 stages of effects that all take place within one hour after drinking a can of coke. In case you can’t read the small writing above, here’s a breakdown of the effects:

1. The First 10 Minutes

In the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hist your system.

Normally, consuming this amount of sugar in such a short period of time would often lead to vomiting, due to the overwhelming sweetness.

However, in this instance, the phosphoric acid cuts the flavor which allows you to keep it down.

2. 20 Minutes

After 20 minutes, your blood sugar levels spike dramatically. This causes an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this issue by turning any sugar it can find into fat, which coincidentally, you have a lot of at this time.

3. 40 Minutes

After 40 minutes, your body’s absorption of caffeine is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps even more sugar into your bloodstream.

The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked, preventing drowsiness.

4. 45 Minutes

After 45 minutes, your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is actually the same way heroin works, just so you’re aware.

5. 60 Minutes

The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners, also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play, making you have to go to the toilet. It’s now assured that you’ll evacuate the calcium, zinc and magnesium that was headed to your bones, as well a sodium electrolyte and water.

As the rave inside of you dies down, you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now literally excreted all the water that was inside the coke.

But not before infusing it with valuable minerals your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

This infographic was designed to show you just how much of an effect a single can of coke can have on your body. Now imagine drinking one of these, or two of these a day.

The effect shown above are multiplied.

Let’s quickly summarise the 7 stages mentioned in the image:

  • 10 minutes – The sugar hits your system
  • 20 minutes – Your liver turns the sugar into fat
  • 40 minutes – Caffeine is absorbed and blood pressure rises
  • 45 minutes – The increase in dopamine production stimulates pleasure
  • 60 minutes – Phosphoric acid combines with other ingredients to boost metabolism
  • 60 minutes – All useful minerals are excreted and wasted
  • 60 minutes – The sugar crash makes you irritable and sluggish
